The Low-Consumption Hive® your RBC®
Low-energy beehives, what are they?
The low-energy hive (LEH) is an innovative hive designed to offer bees a habitat close to the thermal comfort they find in a hollow tree trunk, while remaining perfectly suited to professional beekeeping.
By improving the thermal comfort of bees, the Low-Consumption Hive (LCH) directly contributes to their health, reduces mortality rates, and promotes more dynamic and populous colonies.
Bees primarily use honey as an energy source to heat the brood nest. Unlike the majority of insects that wait for favourable climatic conditions to develop, bees possess the unique ability to regulate and maintain the optimal temperature for raising their brood. This thermal regulation is essential for their survival and represents a significant portion of their energy consumption, mobilising a large number of bees to ensure this vital function.
The Low Energy Hive optimises brood-rearing conditions through better thermal insulation. Colonies therefore expend less energy heating their environment, which results in:
- Enhanced bee vitality.
- More populous beehives.
- A reduction in the effort required to maintain the temperature.
- Better honey yields for the beekeeper.
In short, RBC is not only an innovation for the welfare of bees but also an asset for beekeeping adapted to climate change.
The concept of the Low Consumption Hive
The Low-Energy Hive is not just an insulated hive: it is a true revolution in beekeeping practices. Although some beekeepers have incorporated Marc Guillemain's High-Performance Insulated Partitions (PIHPgm) into their hives, many have not adopted the fundamental and essential principles for optimal management of the Low-Energy Hive. By doing so, they are missing out on incredible potential, much like using an electric car solely to listen to the radio, without taking advantage of its ability to drive. The Low-Energy Hive is not just a technical advancement, it is a new way of thinking about and practising beekeeping.
Over the course of their collaboration, Marc Guillemain and Damien Merit have identified three essential elements for maximising the efficiency and benefits of low-consumption beehives. These three principles, as revolutionary as the components of the hive itself, transform the physiology of bees, promote their health and dynamism, and allow for significantly higher honey yields. These three fundamental elements are:
- The pressure cooker effect
- The double room
- The heat fireplace
In short, the Low-Energy Hive is far more than a simple technical improvement: it is a revolution that redefines beekeeping practices. Colonies become healthier, more dynamic, and more productive, just as fertile land yields abundant harvests when well-maintained. But if this fertile land is poorly exploited, the harvests will be meagre and disappointing. The same applies to the Low-Energy Hive: if managed poorly, it will not be able to express its full potential and offer the exceptional results it is capable of providing to a beekeeper who can master these 3 elements.
Low-Energy Hive Rollout
Marc Guillemain and Damien Merit have carried out extensive awareness work across France and Europe to promote the Low-Consumption Hive. Through training courses and conferences, often organised within the framework of ANERCEA, they have enabled many beekeepers to adopt the Low-Consumption Hive. This fieldwork marked the beginning of a real snowball effect, popularising the method which is now a widely recognised success.
The writing of a book, produced by Jean Riondet, Damien Merit and Marc Guillemain, was also a key element of this dissemination. Titled The Low-Energy Hive: A Beekeeping Revolution (Éditions Ulmer, 2023), this book has quickly become an essential reference, providing precise advice and detailed explanations for professionals and amateurs alike. Published posthumously for Marc Guillemain, it can be considered his testament. This book is so revolutionary that it renders traditional beekeeping beginner books obsolete.
A second book, aimed at beginners, was co-written by Damien Merit and Jean Riondet: Setting up your first apiary (Éditions Ulmer, 2025). This work, which is an enriched rewrite of a previous book by Jean Riondet, offers a simplified and accessible approach to guide new beekeepers through their first steps.
The realisation of the crucial importance of insulation for bee health has been so strong that France Agrimer has granted a subsidy to support hive insulation. However, this notoriety has also led to counterfeits: some material suppliers have tried to reproduce the elements of the low-consumption hive without respecting its essential foundations, resulting in poor-quality equipment. These poorly made copies have sometimes caused disappointment among beekeepers, who have not been able to achieve the expected results.
To remedy this, Damien Merit has decided to create an official brand. This initiative aims to guarantee the quality and authenticity of the Low Consumption Hive components. By providing the right products and training beekeepers in good practices, he ensures that the method continues to deliver exceptional results.
